Freedom of Information

How to find or request information from the council

The Freedom of Information Act (FOI) gives you the right to ask the Council for recorded information we hold. We’re committed to being open and transparent, and we’re always happy to help you access the information you need.

What information is available?

Much of the information held by the council is already available on this website. Details of the information we publish and how to obtain copies can be found in our publication scheme, linked below. Please note that the links within the Publication Scheme have not yet been updated to point to this website; please contact the Clerk if you need assistance to find any of the information.Internal (unpublished) information held by the council is still available via an FOI request.

How to Make an FOI Request

If the information you require is not already publicly available, you can make an FOI request by email or letter. Your request must be in writing and should include:

  • Your name
  • A contact address (email or postal)
  • A clear description of the information you’re looking for

You don’t need to mention the Freedom of Information Act, but doing so can be helpful. If you’re not sure how to word your request, please get in touch — we can guide you on how to frame it so we can find the right information.

Response Times

Once we receive your request, we will respond promptly and within 20 working days. Our response will usually include:

  • Whether we hold the information
  • The information itself, or
  • An explanation if we need more time or clarification

If we need to pause the clock to ask you for more details, we’ll let you know.

When a Request May Be Refused

In some circumstances, we may not be able to provide the information you’ve asked for. This can happen if:

  • An exemption applies (for example, releasing the information would breach someone’s privacy)
  • The request is vexatious or repeated
  • The cost of providing the information would exceed the statutory limit

If we refuse your request, we will explain why and tell you how to request an internal review.

Need Help?

If you’re unsure what to ask for or how to make your request, please contact the Clerk who can guide you through the process.
