How is the parish council funded?

Parish Councils are part of local government and receive public money through council tax. This page explains how Aust Parish Council receives funding.

Precept and budget setting

Each year Aust Parish Council is required to approve a budget and set the precept amount for the coming year.

The precept (the PC’s share of council tax) is then collected on our behalf by South Glos. Council and is our main source of funding to run council services. The council has set the precept for this financial year, 2026/27, at £7,030. This equates to an average (Band D) charge of £28.81 for the year.

The budget can be found here: Adopted budget 2026-27

The council regularly monitors spending against the budget and may make minor amendments through the year as circumstances change.

Other funding sources

The council holds reserve funds in an interest-bearing savings account and received a small amount of interest each quarter.

Occasionally, a small amount of Community Infrastructure Levy funding (a tax on new developments) is received, but this is rare due to the Green Belt status of the parish and resulting low levels of development.

We have also received some grant funding in recent years, which has been used towards events to celebrate the Coronation and for equipment for the Woodwell Meadows volunteer group.
